Dr. Bogdan Dorobat led the II edition of Vertebroplasty and Live Surgery Workshop, SUUB, 21.03.2024

On 21.03.2024, a Vertebroplasty Workshop (II Edition) took place at the Bucharest Emergency University Hospital (SUUB) in the Small Amphitheater. The event was organized under the auspices of the Hospital Management, Prof. Dr. Catalin Cirstoiu and under the direct coordination and full support of the Department of Angiography and Interventional Radiology, Head of Department Dr. Bogdan Dorobat.

In the Initial version, the workshop (free) dedicated to resident doctors and specialists in Neurosurgery, Spinal Orthopedics and Interventional Radiology, was designed for 20 – maximum 25 participants. After promoting the event, the demand for vertebroplasty education was higher than we expected and that’s when we increased the number of seats available to 40. This obviously created some logistical difficulties for us due to limited space and practical materials. workshop made available to students. In the end, we believe the Workshop was a success, it received appreciation and we were planning to do it in the same format at the SRNIR Congress (Romanian Society of Interventional Radiology), Poiana Brasov 12-14.04.2024 and maybe also in the fall, in the north of the country , to be able to deliver as much continuing education as possible to as many doctors in Romania as possible.

The participants

In the presentations and workshop opened various topics for discussion with the lecturers, but also among themselves. They also tried the kits on 3D printed vertebrae that simulated the human vertebra and had the cortical and spongy areas of the bone delineated, paying attention to practical aspects: cement mixing times, various viscosities, the type of cement handling and injection, attention to the temperature and humidity in the operating room at the time of the intervention, polymerization temperature and many others.

After the practical part on the vertebroplasty demos in several series, the participants assisted in the Angiography operating room at LIVE Surgery, in 3 distinct totally different cases. There Mr. Dr. Bogdan Dorobat performed the interventions, assisted by Monica Ferrari, and explained to everyone the operative technique, the approach to the case, the particularities of the cement, different viscosities, types of needles, risks, applications. He also exemplified the minimally invasive treatment of fractures and/or osteoporosis by viewing it on the Angiograph.

At the end of the event

Each participant will receive a Participation Diploma. To the extent that they wanted, everyone could take the vertebroplasty kit that they practiced, but also the vertebra that they injected cement into, to show it to fellow doctors and patients, in a legitimate attempt to explain this as clearly and correctly as possible treatment procedure.

Both the EnLife team and the participants felt that it was a practical, successful event that planted more knowledge, made it clearer and more accessible to Vertebroplasty as a first-line treatment in vertebral fractures and osteoporosis. This treatment can be approached in any department of Neurosurgery, Spinal Orthopedics and Interventional Radiology, in public and private hospitals throughout the country, with access to an angiograph or C-arm for visualization.

We thank once again Dr. Bogdan Dorobat, who made a huge effort to stage this workshop with enLIfe and SUUB, the lecturers (Dr. Mihai Magureanu, Monica Ferrari) and absolutely all the colleagues from the Interventional Radiology Department involved in the organization and the participants!
