Congress of the Romanian Society of Neurosurgery 18-21 October 2023, lead by Assoc. Prof. Adrian Bălașa and CaAssoc. Prof. Habil. Horia PLES

Assoc. Prof. Adrian Bălașa, MD, PHD,
Congress President

Dear colleagues and friends,

As the president of the organizing committee, alongside with our university, I would like to welcome you to Targu Mures to the 48 th Congress of RSN in conjunction with the 27 th edition of the French course in neurosurgery.

In an ever-changing world, with daily medical technology advancement, we are in a constant quest to redefine the purposes and strategies of neurosurgery. The overarching topic of our congress will cover the entire spectrum of neurosurgical pathology, including new concepts such as individualized treatment or minimally invasive surgery, which are slowly but surely becoming the new status quo in the medical world.

The neurosurgical activity of Targu Mures, one of the oldest in Romania, started in 1945 under the coordination of Prof. Miskolczi, disciple of the Nobel Prize laureate Ramon y Cajal. Since then, the department has undergone major transformations, representing today one of the most important schools of neurosurgery in Romania.

Târgu Mures is a city with a rich tradition in Transylvania, a multicultural center with historical landmarks such as the Administrative Palace, the Palace of Culture, and the Teleki-Bolyai Library. The latter hosts one of the only existing copies of Thomas Willis’ first edition Cerebri Anatome published in 1664, the first written work to describe and illustrate the Circle of Willis, also subsequently coining the term ‘neurology’.

Our partner, George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology was founded in 1945 under royal decree and is considered one of the most prestigious institutions of higher education and research in Romania, priding itself on its multicultural and multilinguistic status. Nowadays, it offers high level education for more than 10 000 students.

Through this Congress, we would like to merge our rich tradition in this specialty, with the epitome of research and modernization. We hope this edition will forge friendships and partnerships brought together by our love, passion, and devotion to the advancement of medicine. We are looking forward to welcoming you to Targu Mures in October 2023.

CaAssoc. Prof. Habil. Horia PLES, MD, PhD
President Romanian Society of Neurosurgery

Dear colleagues and guests,

As the President elect of the Romanian Society of Neurosurgery, on behalf of this community, my collaborators and myself, I would like to welcome you to the upcoming event. We are honoured to host the 48th Romanian Congress of Neurosurgery, supported by the 27th Francophone Course of Neurosurgery, in Târgu Mureș, a city full of multicultural history and landmarks.

I would like to mention only two things that clearly place us in a wonderful city:

  • back in 1914 the Palace of Culture was supposed to represent Europe at the International Exhibition in San Francisco with the six stained glass windows from the Hall of Mirrors, but the beginning of the First World War prevented it;
  • Buna Vestire Cathedral (also known as the “Small Cathedral”) built between 1926-1936, is a miniature replica of the San Pietro Cathedral in Rome.

As a doctor from Timisoara I am happy to note that the beginning of our medical schools was under the sign of the royal decree signed by King Mihai I. But in the same time, I am happy to note that medicine in Târgu Mureș means awards and excellence in various fields, from biophysics to the arrange of „George Emil Palade” University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Sciences and Technology.

At this year’s edition of the Romanian Congress of Neurosurgery, the best specialists from Romania and abroad in the fields of neurosurgery and neuroscience will be joining us to generously share with us their own experience. We would like to have a constructive dialogue in which the „new” is the main benchmark.

All of these are arguments for your presence at the congress, which is both scientific and friendly and tends to a continuous evolution of medicine, being interested in developing new collaborations and encourage the promotion of research projects in the medical field.

Along with our appreciation for the effort you are making, this is an impulse and an obligation for us to design a useful and attractive scientific event. I am sure that the academic excellence of the papers will help make this event a truly memorable one and that we will be privileged to discover here, in Târgu Mureș, not only remarkable pages of history, but also the tradition of the Romanian school of Neurosurgery.

We hope that this event is a good new opportunity for beautiful memories, stronger friendships, new national and international relationships, a good time and an ideal opportunity for knowledge exchange, to generate new ideas, concepts, strategies and practical skills in neurosurgery and neurosciences nationally and internationally, for the benefit of patients and the prestige of neurosurgery and neuroscience as well.

Therefore, we invite you to join us in organizing this event by disseminating this information to all stakeholders. Do not forget to mark the days of 18 – 21 October 2023 in your schedule of activities, as being dedicated to the Romanian Congress of Neurosurgery.
