The exhibition “Centaurs behind the mirror” – decorative, deviant, abstract, contemporary art style, Alin Ladaru PhD

Expo and period: ISPE Bucharest (Lacul Tei Offices, main hall), Bdul Lacul Tei no 1-3, sect 2, Bucharest, 15.01-15.03.2024

The “Centaurs behind the mirror” exhibition is a collection of emotions, fairy tales and mental agonies collected during the pandemic until now.

The beginning. Because it is difficult for me to describe it, I will start from the most superficial point of the story: in the 2000s I flirted with naive, cubist painting and on my way from Iasi to Bucharest I stopped for a year or so in Focsani, at home, where I was born and mostly grew up in my grandparents’ house (who raised me from 6 months) and together with a much more talented friend than me, we painted in oil, in acrylic, we made our own canvases in the yard and garden and sell these works on eBay for modest sums, rarely more, to live and entertain. Since then I very rarely returned to painting, being swallowed up by the madness in Bucharest and the job in medical device (I will detail later what psychological impact the job had on creation).

The pandemic. In the ISPE Office (today Lacul Tei Offices), doing daily work for enLife, communication with people, friends, clients during the pandemic was increasingly limited, almost non-existent and at one point I was completely alone for months in the office and warehouse, alone right on the 2nd floor and on many days I think there were only a few people “on my toes” in the whole building. I felt like painting again and after a few failed canvases I said to myself: “how about painting a bust of a mannequin in acrylic colors”, after which 2 more came and then about 10-12 and suddenly I was surrounded of mannequins that I started pairing, suspending them on wheelchairs and constantly applying objects from around to pierce them, cut them, glue them, talk to them in the absurd silence around them. Keep calm, I did not exaggerate, I have the exercise during the internships at Socola in Iasi and I have always been fascinated by the madness, the schizophrenia especially the creative one and the diurnal bipolarity of many of us, including mine. We are, as a contemporary psychiatrist said: half schizophrenic and the rest obsessive-compulsive.

The concept.

Fantastic animals

These fantastic animals, my favorite animals, in the form of timeless installations, resemble atypical Centaurs in the haughtiness of each male bust superimposed on another male bust, either symmetrical or asymmetrical, suspended from a torso constructed from the seat of a wheelchair that – in a few copies, the arms, as “wings” close to the chest, remained. I call each installation animal because I want to keep it from the unnatural, wild, instinctual, Primal, androgynous aspect that in its lucidity would crush your temple with a diamond hoof only to turn you into particles and shatter you with the pollen in the wind to give birth to another plant, another flower. The centaurs behind the Mirror are your faces and states, the Watcher, it’s about you, through my lens, your need to constantly rediscover and validate yourself, in your many incarnations.

The symbol. Centaurs are in antithesis with renowned knights and riders. Instead of taming their instincts, centaurs let themselves be guided by them. They symbolize desire, violence, brutality, adultery, revenge and the devil. They represent the struggle between good and evil, moderation and excess, passion and property, revenge and forgiveness, faith and unbelief, god and beast. The exhibition

My centaur stud…

the 7 untamed, are bipolar beings composed of 2 androgynous busts, which combine and neutralize the good-bad couple, front-back, magnetically capture emotions represented by extensions as wings, objects that have fallen gravitationally on these bodies from the various drawers of existence starting with toys (Lego pieces left over from my daughter Ines’s games), spinal surgery forceps from our spine surgery kits, screws, nails, light bulbs, springs found in various places and metalwork factories, keyboard keys of PC, broken glass beads and clear glass shapes, coins, neon tubes, broken pieces of mirror placed on wings transacting pain and release through flight, floppy disks, CDs, square mirror shapes that put you on The Watcher in Reflection. You cannot escape the Reflection and the diversity of images you see, you are a different personality each time, just as the 7 Centaurs are each the embodiment of a different primordial sin of the 7: Pride, Love of silver (stinginess and greed, avarice), Debauchery, Envy or lust, Indulgence, Anger, Laziness satellite next to the central piece, the Creator (the 8th installation). Because we are in His image and likeness, all sins, miseries and Light are part of the meaning or just as we are the combination of anger and love, sorrow and ecstasy, liberation and blindness, flight and fall. On his wings arched with feathers from acrylic painted CDs, still lies music interrupted by color, on his neck rests half a skull that, like a patient, had a defect sealed with a dark green shell, and in in the place of his brain, lies an unlit bulb that tricks the eye into thinking that the mind has stopped in the rift between Time and Void.

The 7 Centaurs are the spirits of the living and the dreamers, they are the cores of their personal planets that attract in an irreversible Gravity useless objects, but chosen from the harp’s eyelid holder, objects that floated adrift and with their newborn scream landed on body giving it shape. They have in them a silent, sullen, cheeky, lecherous magnetism and whatever words I use impress you with the sensuality and indifference with which they do not look at you, they have something to do inside them, invisible to you, and at the foot of each double body, tired of singing, lies either a whole skull or a fragment, once used in anatomy courses or BMF surgery workshops, or they are even the pre-operative 3D models of some patients who needed cranioplasty.

The style

comes from decorative art, deviant-art, abstract, naive, with elements of art-nouveau, full of curved and imperfect lines that do not aim to copy a theme, they are a play, a spontaneity, a fusion between sculptural, collage techniques, the installations having elements of fragility, non-glued parts (those in the seat mirrors) being prepared for transformation. They are a type of construction (versatile and mobile) that can be continued indefinitely until they self-consume. I didn’t try to imitate the perfect, photographic style of body-painting, I didn’t follow the harmony of colors or the physics of weights, axes, elements intuitively merging with each other.

On the bodies appear 3D printed parts of vertebra once used in the pre-operative planning step and they even belong to real people, all this play with the prints of anatomical segments (skulls, vertebrae, mandibles) bearing the imprint of trauma and healing vibrations, or components and needles from vertebroplasty kits, nucleoplasty and many other small medical devices used in spinal and cranial surgery.

Poems. Each centaur was born from a white verse or a white verse was born from the back and dissected deltoid of a centaur. Don’t listen to him, don’t hear him, he speaks to you like another inner voice. Stop whining! Some poems in white verse (link)>>

The history of these emotions, feelings and spirits began forever but took the form of the pain of some people whom I began to see in hospitals starting from the fall of 2001 when I started working as a medical representative in Cantacuzino, Fundeni and Floreasca hospitals through the departments of cardio-vascular surgery and orthopedics where patients with diabetic foot in advanced stages or traumatic patients who suffered leg or thigh amputations came. I saw the empathy of some surgeons, the mercy with which they decided these dramatic moments with patients, but also the commerciality with which some of them considered numbers, quantities… and then the day or days after the operation when, through a mechanism of neuroplasticity, the patient still felt his missing limb . and the rest, later people crushed under the fury of their destiny with bones that needed Ti rods and plates to recover… until 10 years ago when I came into contact with patients with cranial defects who needed the completion of a defect then in different areas of the head to look whole again like other people.

“Centaurs behind the mirror”

…are my and your countless moods and faces, mirrors in mirrors, losses, madness, flight of ideas, melancholy, births and hunger for sunrise without words, biting colors, imperfect and imperfections, naiveties, broken lines, trembling, undulating , unwanted by anyone, attracted by these magnetic animals, bright and faded, intertwined in a gourmand schizo-pallor, not seasoned with any horseradish or tears, but loving Aglanico and Cabernet Franc liqueurs, ecstatic, unkissed on the mouth, licking the crest, vengeful and alive at the same time.
