Dear colleagues,
As we plan the programme for our 2023 annual congress, we are very much inspired by the amazing experience that was CIRSE 2022. Seeing our friends from around the world come together again in person in such great numbers to celebrate and further develop our discipline reminded us of what this community is all about; teamwork, knowledge exchange, innovation, and patient focus.
Our Scientific Programme Committee is already working hard on putting together a programme that will do justice to CIRSE’s standing as the world’s premier congress for minimally invasive image-guided therapies, and we are happy to share with you some of the highlights we have in store.
Deep dive into arterial interventions
As a new feature, CIRSE 2023 will include a deep dive day on arterial interventions, offering sessions on topics such as complex arterial occlusions, new technologies for SFA treatment, and an expert round table in which we will hone in on the management of acute arterial occlusions. Furthermore, in a hot topic symposium, we will look at the latest outcomes from sirolimus-eluting devices. Workshops on access in small arteries and complex below-the-knee recanalisations will provide attendees with practical tips and tricks on these procedures.
Deep dive into venous treatment
The new deep dive day on venous interventions will also comprise a plethora of extremely interesting topics, covering everything from venous stents to embolic disease treatment, and much more. In addition, dedicated workshops will cover lower limb superficial venous ablation, venous sampling, as well as IVC filter and foreign body retrieval.
IDEAS
The Interdisciplinary Endovascular Aortic Symposium (IDEAS) will kick off on day three of the congress, as always providing a fantastic platform to discuss aortic treatment in a multidisciplinary setting. The IDEAS programme committee headed by Eric Verhoeven and Hicham Kobeiter have done an amazing job putting together a programme in which vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists will scrutinise tricky cases, debate all that is new in 2023 in a hot topic symposium, and look at innovations in techniques and devices.
Neuro-interventions
Accommodating the growing need for interventionists who are trained to treat stroke patients, the neuro track will scrutinise stroke management in a dedicated workshop, a focus session, and an expert round table. In addition, this track will take a look at carotid blowouts, tumours and other catastrophes, and ask whether carotid stenting is making a comeback.
Embolotherapy
It goes without saying that embolisation will also play a major role in the congress programme, with numerous lectures examining issues such as embolisation for benign disease, the non-traumatic bleeding patient, and trauma treatment, to name a few. In other sessions, the experts will mainly focus on the embolic agents we currently have at our disposal and how they can further be improved. Dedicated hands-on device trainings will give congress participants the chance to test some of the latest embolisation devices to familiarise themselves with these tools and ask the instructors their questions.
Non-vascular interventions
Within the non-vascular topic track, we will pay particular attention to MSK procedures, with an expert round table on knee osteoarthritis, a hot topic symposium on vertebroplasty, and a workshop on osteoarthritic pain and sports injuries. Other non-vascular topics will include biliary interventions and lymphatic procedures, among others.
Interventional oncology
Covering one of the most rapidly evolving applications of interventional radiology, the interventional oncology track will scrutinise the status quo of the treatment of a variety of malignancies, such as HCC, renal cancer, lung metastases, and many more. In addition, we will examine the evidence on how in many instances IR procedures are evolving from being palliative to being curative applications. In this context, we will get an update on the CIREL and the CIEMAR studies as well as the RESPECT trial. Looking into potential new areas for growth within interventional oncology, the expert panel of the “New frontiers for ablation” session will look at the use of ablative techniques for pancreatic, prostate, and breast cancer as well as intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.
IR management
The sessions on IR management continue to be a cornerstone of our programme, as these topics are vital to further pushing interventional radiology as a clinical specialty, achieving subspecialty status throughout the world, and guiding the field’s future development.
The next generation
One of the reasons subspecialty status is so vital to the future of interventional radiology is that it will help attract more bright minds straight out of medical school. Fostering the next generation of IRs is also why CIRSE 2023 will host another comprehensive students’ programme allowing medical students from around the world to attend the congress free of charge. Young physicians who have already chosen to train in interventional radiology are further supported by the European Trainee Forum which will host a four-session series to help them jump-start their careers.
Further foci: paediatrics and women’s health
The paediatric IR sessions at CIRSE 2022 met with great success, which is why we will again offer a focus on interventions in children. In a similar fashion, we will pay particular attention to women’s health issues. The lectures on all these focus topics will be arranged in a way that will let interested parties follow all of them with as little overlap as possible.
Radiation protection
The Radiation Protection Pavilion will draw attention to a topic that might sometimes get neglected in our clinical practice; ensuring maximum safety from unnecessary radiation for our team and our patients. Throughout a series of short talks, experts will provide valuable tips and tricks on how to maximise safety, complemented by an exhibition on protective equipment.
Multidisciplinary Sessions
Highlighting the multidisciplinary nature of modern medicine, CIRSE also plans to continue inviting societies from neighbouring specialties. The sessions at CIRSE 2022 delivered in cooperation with EASL and EANM have been great examples of a multidisciplinary patient focused discussion and exchange of information. Watch out for the CIRSE 2023 programmed sessions that will be delivered in cooperation with some of the most esteemed medical societies in Europe in the field of oncology, urology, and liver disease. Our goals
CIRSE 2023 is set to break all previous records, offering more educational and scientific sessions than ever given by lecturers from around the globe. Specific emphasis has been given to increase the number of female presenters. Thanks to the dynamic pool of up-and-coming female IRs, we are confident that this trend will continue in the years to come, giving stronger representation to women in the specialty and thus attracting more female medical students to our field.
CIRSE 2023 will also feature a record-breaking number of hands-on device trainings and workshops, allowing congress-goers to stay on the cutting edge in the device sector, improve their technical skills, and get valuable tips and tricks from experienced colleagues.
Venue
Copenhagen will be a marvellous background for CIRSE 2023 with its beautiful old town inviting congress-goers to continue their discussions after hours in one of its picturesque harbour cafés. Copenhagen’s Bella Centre, which will be our host venue, is a top-notch facility that leaves nothing to be desired. Its newly inaugurated exhibition hall will allow us to grow our congress while at the same time assuring tried and tested quality, enabling us to put on the most comprehensive technical exhibition to date. We very much look forward to what our corporate partners will present during the satellite symposia and, of course, at the exhibition and their learning centres.
